A new study argues that our bodies simply can’t handle the velocity of modern life. The problem isn’t that we are weak. It’s that we are running old hardware on new software.

Social scientists from Singapore reviewed decades of data to propose what they call the Social Evolutionary Mismatch and Competition Hypoasis (SEMCH). The core idea is brutal in its simplicity: humans evolved for small groups. We did not evolve for algorithms.

The Brain in a World That Changed Overnight

For hundreds of thousands of years, the human mind was calibrated for survival in tight-knit tribes.

Our threat detection system is excellent. It helps us spot a predator or a social outcast. It works.

But it assumes a limited pool of data.

Today, we are competing against everyone. Always.

The internet dissolved the boundaries of the tribe. We no longer compare ourselves just to our neighbors. We compare ourselves to celebrities, influencers, and strangers across the globe.

This creates a constant, low-grade hum of inadequacy.

“It wasn’t easier to understand our standing in a group in the past,” notes Jose Yong, a research psychologist at James Cook University in Singapore. “But now we are continually comparing ourselves against long lists… even when those signals come from strangers.”

The result is a heightened sense of competition that never shuts off.

Stress becomes chronic. Loneliness spikes. We feel isolated even when we are connected.

These aren’t just “personal” issues. They are systemic.

The Polycrisis Feedback Loop

It’s not just social media. It’s everything.

The researchers describe the current era as a “polycrisis.” Climate change. Pandemics. Economic instability. Artificial intelligence.

These forces don’t just exist side-by-side. They feed each other.

Rising costs make us anxious. Anxiety makes us hoard resources and act selfishly. This erodes social trust. Lower trust increases economic insecurity. Which leads to more hoarding.

The cycle tightens.

This feedback loop drives burnout. It kills prosocial behavior. It creates a society that is hyper-competitive yet deeply unhappy.

Urban living adds fuel to this fire. Crowded cities trigger physical stress responses. Our bodies react as if we are under constant physical attack.

Culture now outweighs pure environment in shaping our evolution. We are changing ourselves to survive the conditions we created.

Designing for Our Actual Biology

If the problem is a mismatch, the solution requires redesigning our environments.

This applies to concrete cities. And digital spaces.

We need urban planning that reduces overcrowding. Natural spaces. Greenery. These aren’t luxuries. They are biological necessities for a stress-regulated nervous system.

But digital design matters just as much.

The researchers do not want to ban the internet. We cannot un-invent it. Instead, they argue that platforms should be built to reduce competitive feelings.

Currently, most apps are optimized to trigger fear of missing out (FOMO) and social comparison. This keeps users engaged. It also breaks our mental health.

Can we build technology that respects our evolutionary limits?

“That means we should think not only about individualresilience, but also about how cities and communitiesaredesigned,” says Sarah Chan from the Singapore University ofTechnology and Design.

We need interventions that work with human nature. Not against it.

Future research will focus on testing these ideas. Real-world experiments to see how physical and digital environments impact well-being.

The goal is clear: reduce the friction between who we are and where we live.

It sounds like a lot to ask of busy city planners and Silicon Valley engineers.

But maybe the only way to fix the mind is to change the world it lives in.
