From ARPANET to 4.5 Billion Users: How the Internet Actually Grew

The internet is not a single entity. It is a massive, publicly accessible computer network that connects smaller networks across the globe. This global web did not appear out of nowhere. It evolved from a specific U.S. Defense Department initiative designed for survival during wartime.

The roots of this system trace back to ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). Established in 1969, the program aimed to create a secure communications system that could withstand nuclear conflict. The initial connections linked computers at four institutions: the University of California, Los Angeles; Stanford Research Institute; the University of California, Santa Barbara; and the University of Utah.

Academics quickly realized the potential for collaboration. By 1971, developers created the first program for sending e-mail over a distributed network. This feature proved so useful that it dominated traffic by 1973, when international links opened up in Britain and Norway. Mailing lists, newsgroups, and bulletin-board systems followed.

Why TCP/IP Became the Standard

The architecture of ARPANET changed permanently in the 1970s with the development of TCP/IP communications protocols. These protocols were adopted as the standard for ARPANET in 1982 and 1983. This shift led to the widespread use of the term “Internet.”

In 1984, the domain name addressing system arrived, making it easier for humans to navigate digital spaces. The following year, the National Science Foundation (NSF) launched NSFNET. This distributed network handled far greater traffic than its predecessor. Within a year, more than 10,000 hosts were connected to the Internet.

Real-time conversation became possible in 1988 with Internet Relay Chat protocols. Then, in 1990, ARPANET ceased to exist. The NSFNET remained, and the first commercial dial-up access to the Internet became available to the public.

When Did the World Wide Web Take Over?

The World Wide Web was released to the public in 1991 via FTP. Its growth accelerated rapidly after the Mosaic browser launched in 1993. The browser’s popularity drove a proliferation of websites and users.

In 1995, the NSFNET returned to its role as a research network. Internet traffic was then routed through private network providers rather than NSF supercomputers. That same year, the Web became the most popular part of the Internet, surpassing FTP protocols in traffic volume.

By 1997, the scale of the network had expanded significantly. There were more than 10 million hosts on the Internet and over 1 million registered domain names.

How People Access the Modern Internet

Access methods have diversified far beyond the early days. Users now connect via radio signals, cable-television lines, satellites, fiber-optic connections, and the public telecommunications (telephone) network.

The reach of this infrastructure is staggering. By 2020, approximately 4.5 billion people—more than half of the world’s population—were estimated to have access to the Internet.

The jump from a military survival tool to a global utility for billions of people happened in less than four decades. We still rely on the same foundational protocols established in the early 1980s. The architecture holds. The question is what comes next when half the planet is already online.
