Sparkling Water May Boost Gamer Focus, Study Suggests

A new study indicates that sparkling water may be a surprisingly effective tool for gamers seeking sustained concentration, potentially offering a healthier alternative to caffeine-heavy beverages. Researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan found that esports players maintained better focus and reported less fatigue when drinking carbonated water during extended gaming sessions.

The Challenge of Prolonged Focus

Competitive gamers and anyone requiring long periods of attention—drivers, night-shift workers, even students—often rely on stimulants like coffee or energy drinks. While effective, these come with well-known health risks when consumed in excess. The study sought to test if a simple change in hydration could provide a viable alternative.

How the Study Worked

Researchers monitored 14 casual gamers playing virtual soccer for three hours under two conditions: one with plain water, the other with sparkling water. Key metrics—reaction times, pupil dilation (a sign of fatigue), physical stress levels, and self-reported tiredness—were tracked to gauge performance. The results were clear: sparkling water demonstrably reduced fatigue, enhanced enjoyment, and preserved cognitive function compared to still water.

Why Sparkling Water?

The study doesn’t definitively explain the mechanism, but researchers hypothesize that the carbon dioxide in sparkling water stimulates transient receptor potential (TRP) channels in the mouth. These receptors trigger increased brain arousal. While not directly proven in this research, this theory aligns with previous findings showing carbonated drinks can improve cognitive tasks. Players also committed fewer in-game fouls while drinking sparkling water, suggesting improved control.

Funding and Transparency

It’s crucial to acknowledge that the study received partial funding from a soft drink company specializing in sparkling water, and two authors are company employees. However, the researchers assert that funding sources had no influence over the study’s design, data analysis, or interpretation.

What This Means

These findings suggest that sparkling water is a simple, accessible option for anyone needing to stay sharp for extended periods. Though not directly compared against coffee or energy drinks, the study provides compelling evidence for its benefits in at least one real-world setting: competitive gaming. Further research is needed to explore broader applications and the precise physiological mechanisms at play.
